CARRAGHER FEARFUL FOR LIVERPOOL’S TRANSFER HOPES

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher remains fearful for the transfer ambitions of the club this summer.

Jurgen Klopp has taken a personal interest in recruitment procedures this season as the German is seeking the best talents to join the ranks at Anfield.

The Reds want a top central defender to join the club and help solve its defensive issues. The defence was one key area many would agree affected the Kops last season. The club had hoped to get Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk but the much anticipated deal fell through.

The Dutchman was reported to have agreed personal terms but the Saints backed down from the deal when it went public while they had not yet sanctioned it. With Liverpool agreeing to back down, the club would have to seek elsewhere for a top defender and not many are available.

“I think with the centre back position, it’s so difficult to find someone you want because you ask so much of them now. They’ve got to be good on the ball. Basically they start the attacks now, so you can’t have anyone who can’t feed passes,” the defensive legend complained.

Carragher adds that central defenders are expected to aggressively deal with threats, play counter attacking football in addition to their passing aptitude. He says with full backs playing high and wide, the defenders would need to deal with the counter attacking football of opponents.

The retired player turn pundit added that players like Leonardo Bonucci and Sergio Ramos would concede goals at Anfield as they are open when full backs run out. He admits that it is not easy for fullbacks to cover the pitch with so much asked of them now as more wingbacks play the game.
