Carragher Backs Up Hodgson choices

Roy Hodgson’s decision to include Luke Shaw in his provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup is a choice that has sparked debate across supporters of the nation as some believe that it was the correct thing to do but others aren’t agreeing with the English coach.

Ashley Cole is an experienced defender who has already made a number of appearances for England throughout his entire career but he has been dropped and replaced by the 18 years old Luke Shaw.

Jamie Carragher has expressed his opinion concerning this decision and the former Liverpool performer has backed up the choice of Hodgson as he believes it was the right thing to do.

“He’s gone for Shaw and with the fact that Baines looks like he’s going to start, it’s probably the right decision. Ashley has been the best left-back England have ever had and possibly the world’s best left-back for a few years as well. He played at the top level throughout his whole career so he should be proud of what he’s achieved. We’ll miss him a lot, without a doubt.”

“It’s a massive opportunity for Shaw and, who knows, he could be involved right from the start if Baines gets an injury. He’s had a great season along with a lot of Southampton players. I think a lot of credit goes to Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of the club. It just looks like a good club there, with young players coming through, a few big-money signings doing well as well. He’s fitted in to a good side and it always helps if those around you are playing well but he’s had a major impact for how old he is he is powerful, quick and strong’’. Carragher stated.

England has friendly matches scheduled to be played against Peru and Ecuador just a few days prior to the start of the 2014 World Cup and it will be an excellent training ground for the young defender to adapt to the playing style of the nation as he and the squad have to get ready for their trip and journey to Brazil.
